Dominic College and GYC

I had the wonderful pleasure on Wednesday night of attending the Guilford Young College Ceremony of Commendation.

Awards were presented to students in celebration of their Academic Achievements and their outstanding contributions to all aspects of the College during 2015.

Year 12 students from 2015 are invited to return to the College to receive their awards along with a number of current Year 12 students who were also award winners for last year.

There were so many successful Old Scholars from Dominic College. It was certainly a proud moment for myself and their families to see them being presented with awards and scholarships. These students have worked very hard to achieve outstanding results and they were rewarded for their hard work and commitment to learning and the life of the College.

I congratulate all of the award winners and especially our Dominic Old Scholars for their outstanding achievements and fine example to the students of Dominic College. Mrs Janine O’Hea will showcase these individuals in next week’s newsletter.

Year 10 Transition to College
Throughout the year our current Year 10 students will not only be focusing on preparing for their final exams in their final year of study at Dominic College but will also begin working through the process of transition to future pathways beyond Year 10.

Students will be invited to tour the GYC facilities and learning spaces and will be supported in choosing subjects for Year 11.

Dominic College has an excellent relationship with GYC which ensures a smooth transition for students as they take the next steps in their educational journey.

Now is the time to begin planning for these pathways and preparing for College enrolment. We are very happy to support students and parents in their enrolment at GYC.

Year 10 VET Information Night
On Thursday 3 March Year 10 students who are enrolled in VET classes attended the STCCTTC (Southern Tasmanian Catholic Colleges Trade Training Centre) information night at GYC. VET in the catholic system is managed by GYC as the Registered Training Organisation with a variety of VET courses being run in at least 9 schools across Southern Tasmania.

Students and parents first met together in the Bosco Centre where the Principal, Mrs Bobby Court, introduced the guest speaker for the evening, James Atkinson.

James is an Engineer who is currently working as a project manager with Hazel Brothers. He gave an inspiring message to students about setting goals, working hard and learning from your mistakes.

Students then moved to various areas of the College to see the VET facilities in their industry area and hear a presentation from GYC teachers in those industry areas and their own school teachers.

This is another way students are supported through transition into future pathways.
