Bronze Age coming to Dominic College

Archaeologist and old scholar, Sam Dix, Class of 1999, is just one of a number of archaeoligists heading to Dominic College this month to launch National Archaeology Week here with student workshops.

Sam has been recently in England with his family, undertaking a dig in Cornwall, UK.

Sam said that the Bronze Age barrow site was close to the town of Looe, in Cornwall, and dates back to approximately 2,000 BC

'It was discovered in 2017 by the Australian National University during a Geophysical survey. Barrow sites in Britain are almost always burial sites.

'The work is being conducted by the Australian National University and The National Trust of England along with the Cornish Archaeological Society. Many finds have been made including urns from the Bronze Age, stone tools, as well as the Barrow ditch itself. The site overlooks the areas excavated by Time Team in 2009 when they filmed on St Georges Island overlooked by the field in which we have been working."

Research on the finds is now underway in conservation laboratories and a full report will be available later this year.
