Dominic College entertained 60 old scholars and leaders from ten independent schools at a colourful evening in its new student hub on Friday 13 March.
Each year the Combined Southern Tasmanian Independent Schools Old scholars Associations Committee organises one of its member schools to host a "College Colours" cocktail evening. These events have been a tradition carried on for a number of generations, and though the activities of each old scholar association wax and wane with current trends in social interaction, a small number of generous-hearted old scholars maintain the traditions of christian fellowship and friendly rivalry inherent in Tasmanian old scholar friendship.
Dominic College last hosted the event 18 years ago, and thus a number of guests were visiting the College for the first time. Ms Beth Gilligan, Principal of Dominic College, suggested they were impressed by the contemporary facilities as well as by current Year 10 leaders who assisted with refreshments.
"I congratulate the Association on keeping alive the traditions and the values of old scholars," Ms Gilligan said. Mr Tony Webb and Ms Diane Byrne, Dominic Old Scholars Association stalwarts, were delighted to greet many old friends. Dominic College Rector, Fr Frank Bertagnolli SDB reflected on the difference independent schools made in student's lives, and the heritage of the Salesian education. He explained this year was the 200th anniversary of the birth of Don Bosco, founder of the Salesian schools and reflected on their impact in the world today.
The guests were entertained by a musical performance of striking quality from six of the most recent Dominic College graduates. Photos from the evening can be viewed on the Dominic College web gallery: College Colours.
