Last weekend 36 Dominic students and 3 Dominic Old Scholars visited St Joseph’s College in Melbourne to gather with students from Salesian schools from all over the country.
Director of Mission, Mr Tim Swan, said that the Dominic contingent comprised one third of the whole gathering.
'This was the ninth OzBosco and they are all different from each other, but all share the Spirit of Don Bosco with dancing, singing, games, eating together, praying together and making new friends.
'It was a great joy for Br Michael, Lisa McConnon and I to witness our students step out of their comfort zone. Some felt nervous to start with, especially as everyone else was in Years 11 and 12.
'But gradually everyone started to see that OzBosco is like a giant SYDC Retreat where everyone is free to be themselves without judgement or negativity from anyone.'
Year 10 student, SYDC member, Meg Brennan, wrote about her experience for our newsletter. Meg said:
This year, we explored the theme “We Are Family”, where we discussed what it means to be a member of a family - whether biological or friendship. We explored the concepts of being a true Salesian, and how that has influenced our lives to make us the person we are today.
The celebration began with a gathering in the gym, for an introduction. We had activities and got to know other students just like ourselves from all around Australia. We ended the day with a goodnight prayer and story in the Chapel. It was a time for reflection on the busy day that had just passed, and a way in which we could ask God for help, and guidance for the days ahead.
On Saturday morning, 29 April, Dominic students had the pleasure of running the morning aerobics which was an amazing experience. Lisa led the group; the dancing was full of life and energy, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
The keynote speech was delivered by Lauren Hichaaba. She delivered a speech about her family, the search for love, companionship, and finally finding it in her life. Lauren really put into perspective for the audience about knowing what you want, and following through with what you believe before you can understand what others need.
Our final day at OzBosco 2017 was memorable, a personal highlight for me. In the morning, Dominic had the honor of presenting the final prayer and good morning, where we sang, danced, and prayed for the guidance of Don Bosco. It was a special time for Dominic College, and truly fulfilled every expectation, so well done!
This was an excellent OzBosco, one to never be forgotten. This experience has changed my life, and I am sure many other individuals, too! So many new friends were made who will never be forgotten.
We couldn’t have been so successful but for Mr Swan, Br Michael and Ms McConnon. On behalf of the SYDC group, thank you! The countdown has begun for OzBosco 2018!
