Hina dolls

This week I was thrilled when one of our Year 1 students, Daisy Bradley, came to visit me with some beautiful Japanese Hina dolls (hina ningyou).

Her father had received them many years ago when he was an exchange student in Japan.

Daisy (accompanied by her classmate and friend Vincent Davey) visited Year 3 and Year 4 classrooms with me, and proudly showed our students Odairisama (the Emperor) and Ohinasama (the Empress).

The students were thrilled to see the intricate dolls in real life, as they have seen photographs of such dolls in Japanese lessons.

This was wonderful timing, as Hinamatsuri is celebrated each year on March 3. Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day, or Doll Festival) is an occasion to pray for young girls’ growth and happiness. Most families with girls display hina dolls in their homes for Girl’s Day.

Mr Bradley has kindly presented these beautiful dolls to Dominic College, and we were surprised and delighted by the wonderful gift!
