There is always something exciting happening at Dominic College and this week we were so very excited to see a hot air balloon on the College oval.
We watched from our room as the balloon was inflated and took the Year 5 students and some staff members up in the air. Banjo was very lucky to be held in the balloon by Ms Gilligan and was excited to tell us of the experience.
In Kinder, we used this as an opportunity for a writing lesson.
The children all brainstormed what they had seen. We listed words like balloon, air, high, up, down, oval and looked for the sounds in the words we had already learned.
The children then dictated a sentence to me and then attempted to transcribe the sentence with a drawing into their journals.
As emergent writers, you can encourage your child at home to communicate their ideas and thoughts about family experiences with pictures and words.
Early writers will make marks on the page that represent letters, before moving onto letter strings and invented or phonetic spelling of words.
Wherever your child is up to with writing, it is also a great idea to model for them.
If you would like any tips on early writing at home, the Kindergarten staff would be more than pleased to help you.
