Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which we celebrated alongside our Opening College Mass. Thank you to Fr Bernie, Fr Nick and Br Abilio a Salesian Deacon visiting our College, who helped us celebrate these two significant events. Also thank you to the many staff and students who played a significant role in Mass.
Our Kindergarten students had their own special ceremony in their classroom where they too received their ashes to mark the significance of the start of this Lenten season.
The term Lent comes from the Old English word for spring. The period of Lent is 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. It is a time of penance when people are asked to fast and prepare for the commemoration of the sufferings, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Project Compassion is a traditional way of contributing to help the needy through active participation in almsgiving during the season of Lent. Each classroom has their own Project Compassion box and students are encouraged to give what they can during this time. The money raised goes to Caritas, a Catholic organisation that assists the poorest of the world’s people.
In coming weeks I will outline what Dominic College will be doing to support Caritas and detail how Caritas uses these funds to support those in need.
