Annually at this time of the year, Year 7-9 students enter a process of reflection and discernment about the students they believe should lead the College as their Captains and Vice Captains and their House leaders.
On Tuesday, 31 October, Year 9 students wishing to be considered by their 7-9 peers and staff for College Captains presented speeches to their fellow students.
It was with tremendous pride the staff and I listened to the reflections of these fine young men and women who spoke of their love of the College.
They described Dominic College as a family and a wonderful place to learn and grow. They described the many activities they had taken advantage of at school and how they had benefitted and learnt for these.
The students described an array of qualities they felt leaders needed, from having a kind and listening ear, and being accessible, to being well-organised and having ideas.
The students spoke of past leaders who had been role models for them and influenced them. Each student nominee spoke of leadership as service to the community and the role of captaincy as an opportunity to give back to the school community which had given them so much.
They told us that leaders lead from the front, from within and at the side of their group; they spoke of leadership as creating more leaders and that leaders need to live and lead by example.
All of the students truly inspired us and are to be highly commended on their thoughtful insight, dedication to the College and the graciousness with which they acknowledged their fellow nominees.
