During Term 2, the Humanities Department will launch the Tankyuu Project: A cultural exchange program between our Year 8 students and students at our new sister school, Shizuoka Salesio near Tokyo in Japan.
This exciting project will allow the students of Dominic College to engage and interact with their peers in Shizuoka, sharing knowledge, ideas, and culture each fortnight.
The project is intended to bring a range of learning opportunities for our students across the curriculum, including Intercultural Understandings; Asian Perspectives; the development of Social and Communications skills; as well as supplementing the History curriculum as we begin our study of Shogunate Japan.
The Year 8 Humanities team, with the dedicated assistance of Kumashiro Sensei, have been in contact with staff at the Salesio School to plan a variety of interactions between the students.
For the Japanese students, it is also an opportunity to improve their English language skills as they prepare presentations and respond to queries from Dominic College about their daily lives and aspects of their history.
Our interactions will likely take place across a variety of web-based platforms including real-time interactions via Google Hangouts, Blog and Wikispace pages, and potentially uploading video presentations.
We are very excited about the potential for this project to grow into a thriving relationship, where we can continue to make learning engaging, and provide authentic situations for students to share their ideas and knowledge with others.
