OzBosco 2016

Six years in a row and OzBosco continues to amaze me. Every year over 200 young people gather together to celebrate the life of Saint John Bosco and the legacy he left for us. In an atmosphere alive with music, dancing, games, passion, love and joy it is easy to see Don Bosco living in each and every one of us at OzBosco.

Spooky disco Friday 13th

Our Spooky Disco was held on Friday 13 May, for the first time in The Oratory Space and was a very successful and enjoyable night. We had double the numbers of students for both discos compared to last year so that was fantastic - over 150 for K-2 and 100 for 3-6. Tom Atkinson (Year 7) did an amazing job as our DJ and was popular with \all the students. He had worked hard on the music selection and it was fantastic - he even took requests at the 3-6 Disco. I think he will definitely be back next year.

ANZAC Day commemorations 2016

ANZAC Day last year was the 100th Anniversary of the ANZAC Landings at Gallipoli. To commemorate and honour this significant historical occasion we asked all students to get involved in their community as way of recognising and honouring the sacrifices of our forebears. Over 150 Dominic College students participated in numerous parades and services. This was a fantastic experience for our students to have the chance to be directly involved in such a significant community event. As the years move on, it is important that as Australians we never forget the sacrifice that our soldiers, sailors, airmen and volunteers gave towards the future of our country. As a young vibrant section of the community we have an obligation to provide a link between generations and ensure this sacred day in the Australian calendar is always honoured appropriately.

Dominic College at the Derwent Festival

Fifteen Dominic College students ran the robots for visitors to our Dominic College Robotics tent at the Derwent Valley festival on Sunday 10 April. Director of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Selina Kinne, said the display was an extension of the activities undertaken by the Robotics Club at Dominic College, who meet weekly, and particpate in a number of competitions each year. "This was a valuable opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and present a strong image of exciting and engaging learning opportunities at Dominic," Mrs Kinne explained.

Wednesday was an intense but exciting day for cast members of our inaugural performance project, Junior Talking Heads. At 10am, over 80 students and their teachers from Austins Ferry Primary School were the first audience. The visitors were very appreciative of the opportunity to experience live performance and were also treated to a potted workshop session afterwards, where Miss Brownrigg had all the audience up on stage, moving and improvising.

On the evening of Wednesday 31 March Dominic College hosted Round 2 of the Tasmanian Debating Union’s Southern Schools’ Competition. Students, teachers and parents from schools all over Hobart were present for 18 separate debates involving over 100 students. Dominic College’s involvement in this competition has grown this year, with five teams competing across all year levels. Wednesday night was a great excuse to show off our facilities, and an opportunity for staff to come along and observe our students in action.

P&F Easter Raffle

The P&F Easter Raffle has received amazing support from all parents, students and the school community with nearly $3000 being raised in just 3 short weeks. From the donations we received, we managed to put together over 30 large hampers that were drawn on Wednesday afternoon. A huge thanks to Mary, Sharon and Katerina for helping put together the hampers and to Megan and Mary for helping me draw the raffle. Students enjoyed the excitement of the raffle expertly hosted by Mrs Doyle. Thank you again to all families for your donations and to the hard work involved in selling tickets.
